ALEX HURRIED FROM THE hotel, his body sore from the time spent with her. The ache close to his heart possibly more painful, he thought as he rubbed at the spot where he had been shot.

His convertible was parked only a block away from the hotel, but he needed time to think about what had just happened and his condo was walking distance.

He hurried down Ocean Drive, his strides long and eating up ground as he considered all that had transpired last night and then this morning.

He had never experienced such gratification before. Such passion. He told himself it was on account of the demon within her. A demon that could control him as if he were no more than a puppet, he thought, recalling how she had tossed him out of her room with a negligent wave of her hand.

But as he walked, the air of a spring morning slightly cool against his skin, he reminded himself that she had been human the entire night. Possibly too human, he thought, remembering the emotions she had revealed to him. The need to be loved that was still alive in her despite nearly two thousand years as a vampire.

He recalled her words about him – that he had a heart capable of great love. Could his heart possibly be capable of loving someone like Stacia? Of loving a demon?

Too quickly the memories came of the pleasure in her arms. The arms of a woman because the demon had only emerged this morning when she had begged him to leave.

Leave because she was likely as confused as he was, he thought, clenching his fists. Battling the urge to return to the hotel and ease the torment tattooed on her face.

A bad idea, possibly even worse than last night’s idea to get her out of his system.

He had to stop thinking about Stacia. She could take care of herself. In fact, she had been taking care of herself for quite some time before he had come into the picture.

Unlike Andrea and the other missing women who needed someone to take care of them. Who needed him to find them.

With that thought in mind, he crossed the street to his condo. A shower would rid him of the last traces of Stacia and prepare him for the day.
